After studying about the significant landmarks of Europe, we put our young architects to the test: create the Eiffel Tower! The students were put in groups of 4, given a handful of straws, and set loose. They had the opportunity to use any materials in the classroom and were encouraged to use their imaginations and pictures of the Eiffel Tower from books.

On Tuesday, Drew’s grandfather and his wife came to visit and discuss their time living in China. His wife, Mrs. Isabella, was born in China and shared with us how to count and say common phrases in Chinese. Drew’s grandfather shared with us a very interesting story about the Great Wall of China. Then, Mrs. Isabella shared with us about the upcoming holiday, Chinese New Year. We were so excited to see the special gift they brought for us, a red envelope with our name in Chinese and Chinese money. These are a traditional gift for the children in China on the Chinese New Year. We finished off our time with fortune cookies and chocolate money from Drew!

Last Tuesday, we celebrated the traditional Japanese holidays, Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day. The girls celebrated with a tea party including their favorite baby dolls. At our tea party, we served green tea and rice cakes, which were a big hit with everyone! The boys made koi fish kites. On Boys’ Day in Japan, the boys put out a koi fish kite for each of the males in the family. Unfortunately, our boys only had time to make a kite for themselves.

On Friday, we had visitors that were native Colombians (and not from our state capital). Victoria’s grandmother and grandfather came to tell us all about Colombia, South America. They described the geographic land features, Colombia’s pursuit of independence from Spain, and the rich agriculture of coffee beans! Thank you so much for your visit. We learned so much!
Thank you for our visit!

On Wednesday, Mr. Martini (our first grade teacher’s husband) stopped by to play the native Australian instrument, the didgeridoo. The students were amazed by this primitive instrument made by the Aborigines. Mr. Martini informed us that the instrument was made by a tree that had been hollowed out by termites. Then, he blew into the wax-covered mouthpiece. It looked just like when a baby blows air through his lips. The sound was amazing. Mr. Martini was very patient and willing to attempt to make all of the animal sounds our young friends could come up with. We want to send a very big thank you to Mr. Martini and Mrs. Martini for getting him here!

We could feel the air come out of the bottom!
On Tuesday, we celebrated the 100th day of school! Since it was the 100th day, we had to party 100 times over! We began the day with 100 brisk steps in the chilly air. Then, we started working on a paper chain with 100 links. After P.E., we layed each of our 100 items out to see whose was the longest. We discovered that Jackson’s pipecleaners were the longest, Alize’s chocolate chips were the shortest, and Johannes’s paper clip chain was the easiest! After Spanish, we finished up our paper chain and took a break from all that counting! Instead of our regular math lesson, we created cereal necklaces with 100 “beads”. To end off our day, we took 100 licks on a Tootsie Roll Pop to see if we could get to the Tootsie Roll (we couldn’t). We had an excellent time partying for our 100th day!
These are a few of our 100 things!

On Friday, a third grader stopped by to tell us all about recycling! They created a poster to help us remember why we want to take care of our Earth.
Thank you Ashley for stopping by!
